The dot SE country-specific top-level extension was created in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was pretty restrictive, so a very limited number of domains were grabbed. Individuals were allowed to get only one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a necessity, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, businesses and organizations could buy a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, as a consequence, the number of dot SE domains has been mounting each year.
